HOW GREEN IS YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE?
Buying local is the first step to an environmentally friendly spruce!
HOW GREEN IS YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE?
SUSTAINABILITY
The closer the tree has been grown to where it’s bought and the customer lives, the better the carbon footprint.
Cotswold Fir grow their trees on Paul’s 35-acre site at Primrose Vale, near Cheltenham. Many of the trees are rented and collected at the farm, whilst others are delivered locally to our partner shops.
THE ARTIFICIAL VS REAL VS THE POT GROWN CHRISTMAS TREE
Renting a pot-grown Christmas tree has many advantages for the environment.
It’s less resource-intensive than growing them on land because the grower can give each pot the right amount of fertiliser and minimal pesticides; only requiring 1/8th of the land use. Whilst conventional farming often uses heavy machinery to spray across a large area.
ARTIFICIAL CHRISTMAS TREE
You would need to use an artificial tree for approximately 10 Christmases in order for it to keep its environmental impact lower than that of a responsibly disposed real tree.
REAL CHRISTMAS TREE
If disposed of in a sensible manner a real Christmas tree has a far lower carbon footprint than an artificial one.
THE POT GROWN CHRISTMAS TREE
A pot-grown Christmas tree lives on, consuming more CO2 year on year!
TREECYCLE 2020
CHIPS AWAY... TREECYCLE CAMPAIGN
Of course we still stock cut trees for those who prefer this option.
After the festivities have ended, however, why not return your cut tree to Primrose Vale? We support the popular annual Treecycle campaign that returns each January, managed by Tewkesbury Borough Council. There are a number of deposits sites for real Christmas trees around the borough, one of them being Primrose Vale Farm Shop.
By reducing the emissions from transporting trees, and recycling them by chipping, real Christmas trees can become climate positive – reducing the production of carbon released into the atmosphere.
